Latest iPhone 4 Commercial Is All About The Retina Display.

Easily my favorite feature of the iPhone 4.

My modified Apple ”iPhone 4 Bumpers” case.
In my impressions post about my free Apple “iPhone 4 Bumpers” case; I noted that it’s major flaw was that the opening for the dock port was too small for anything but newer Apple iPhone/iPod USB cables. This makes the case incompatible with most 3rd party accessories and car adaptors. Major fail.
With the case otherwise useless, I borrowed a friend’s dremel tool and widened the case’s dock port opening slightly. I used a larger 3rd party USB cable as a guide. It was very easy to do, but I took it slowly so I wouldn’t mess-up.
With my main complaint gone I’ve found the “Bumpers” to be quite nice. I wouldn’t count on this case for protection from a major drop, but it feels better than nothing. I also recommend getting a SPG skin to protect the screen and back from scratches.
The “Bumpers” makes my iPhone too fat to fit my belt holster so I’ve been carrying the iPhone in my pocket again. While slightly harder to get to in my pocket, it’s also less dorky.

Update on the quest for perfect iPhone car integration

This is a follow-up on my past post about my car audio frustrations with an iPhone. Yesterday I received my generic Chinese iPhone cables and car charger:

  • 3-in-1 USB 3.5mm AUX Audio/Data/Charger Cable for iPod/iPhone 2G/3G/3GS
  • 500mA Car Cigarette Powered USB Adapter/Charger (DC 12V/24V)

Ordered both for $6.81 Total

Best $6.81 I’ve spent in a while! The build quality seems just fine and the cables work as advertised; charge and play audio via AUX-out at the same time while allowing full access to the iPhone’s interface. iPhone 4 compatible too!

NOTE: The Apple iPhone 4 “Bumpers” case is not compatible; the dock connector port is too small for this cable’s connector.

So if your car has an AUX input and a lighter outlet, you are good to go. You could even get a tape deck adaptor to work with this via mini jack coupler to get better audio quality and the ability to charge.

I also highly recommend some kind of car mount for the iPhone/iPod so you have easy access to the on-screen controls and GPS apps.

This is likely the closest to perfect car integration I can get without owning a Ford with Sync.

Quick iPhone 4 “Apple Bumpers” impressions.

I got my free case from Apple today. My immediate impression holding the package was “Wow how’d they sell these little things for $30?”. That being said once opened, it feels well made. It easily fit over my SGP skin, in fact the skin likely makes it fit extra snug.

After rocking a “naked” iPhone 4 since June 24, the “Bumpers” makes the iPhone feel a little fat and more rugged. This gives me mixed feelings… It feels like I have a fair amount of protection without having a full covering case. However I love the feel of the naked iPhone 4 and now my phone is too fat to fit in my Incase belt holster case, that I enjoy because it frees-up pocket space.

I’ll give the Bumper more time before I give it my final judgment. If it doesn’t work in my car I have a feeling I’ll be going naked again.

UPDATE: The “Bumpers” case does NOT work with my car AUX cable. This seems to be a common problem with almost any iPhone/iPod car audio cable or dock. I’ve opted against using this case as it’s a pain to remove the bumper just to use accessories… This is a major design flaw.

Pros: Added protection without a bulky case. Good build quality and finish; looks like a part of the phone. Fits over protective skins. All buttons are easily accessible. Raised rubber edges gives front/back some clearance and slip resistance when set on surfaces.

Cons: Feels fat and plastic like an iPhone 3G after being accustom to a naked iPhone 4 and doesn’t look quite as sexy. Is too large to fit most belt cases. Dock port and headphone jack might be too small for some 3rd party cables and accessories.

City Lamp Light - iPhone 4 night photography.
I love the wall and lighting in this one. Also taken and retouched with Camera+.
You can see the original untouched version, it’s lower contrast and less dramatic but a good example of iPhone 4 night photos.

B&W Brick - iPhone 4 night photography.
The iPhone 4 does quite well in low light even without a flash. I took this with Camera+ and applied this really cool B&W “Ansel” filter. I also have a “vintage” version.

Osmos: Must buy iPhone/iPad game.

The video above is of the PC/Mac version ($9.99), but the just released iPhone version and recently released iPad version both look and play as well or better. It’s one of the best relaxation games I’ve ever played and it’s a great showpiece for the iPhone 4’s retina display.

Photos of my iPhone 4 with SGP Steinheil EX Ultra Crystal skin

View large: Photo 1, Photo 2, Photo 3

Quick impressions:

  • Easy to apply, no water/soap mixture used.
  • Included dust removal stickers make it very easy to remove trapped dust.
  • Almost invisible, far less noticeable than the “InvisibleShield” in texture and look.
  • Screen almost looks sharper/brighter (Might be seeing things, but at least it’s not any less sharp).
  • Feels almost naked.
  • Comes with 2 sets of skins so you have a spare.
  • Costs less than 1 full body set of the above mentioned ”InvisibleShield”.

I doubt I’ll ever buy another InvisibleShield if this skin doesn’t start to peel as quickly with normal use (putting in leather belt case or pocket etc).

Thanks to http://twitter.com/hotcereal for the skin suggestion!
