A great video about why Portal is free until May 24.
The Steam Mac watchlist
A list of Mac games already on Steam for Mac, and another list of games that already have Mac ports but aren’t yet on Steam yet.
Torchlight doesn't support cross-platform saves sync
Massively lame for anyone with both a Mac & PC…
Note on SteamCloud support - the Mac version DOES support SteamCloud, however our implementation of that is not cross platform. i.e. you can migrate your saves from PC to PC, and Mac to Mac, and they won’t collide with one another, but your PC saves will not migrate to Mac and vice-versa. Our saves ( and all the other compressed files associated with them when using mods ) are not cross-platform, and we would have had to have thought of that a lot earlier to make it happen. This isn’t a limitation of Steam, it’s just how we initially wrote the game. [link]
I guess I’ll be keeping the game installed on Windows and continue to play it in VMware when I’m using my MacBook Pro, since I’ll be able to save & continue my hours of progress I’ve already put into the game. Unless I intend on having a Mac only character…
Get Portal for FREE until May 24 2010
Portal used to cost money. Until May 24th, it’s free. End of story.
For Mac + PC
Steam for Mac now allows non beta accounts in.
UPDATE: The cross platform store isn’t online yet (as of this post) so you may need to buy cross platform games via the regular store in your browser. Just make sure you stick to games you know are going to be available for Mac on launch like Portal and Torchlight etc. I already own a few cross platform ready games via my PC (shown in the screen above).
UPDATE: The Mac store is now live.
Steam for Mac download link found
Via my friends on Twitter.
As of this post it’s still not officially released and non-beta accounts are still locked-out…
At least you can get ahead of the rush to download the client when the Mac client is made public.
It’s Steam for Mac day, but when will Valve release it? Valve is known for taking their time releasing anything.
A great Steam for Mac redesign by cocoia.com.
The Mac Steam client will look exactly the same as the PC version when it’s out on the 12th… It’s a shame too. Valve really should hire this guy to implement this UI redesign for the Mac client. Checkout his screenshots on Flickr.
Steam for Mac beta set for May 12

The Steam for Mac public beta was originally expected by the end of April, but at least May 12 is still soon. Valve has proven many times to be more interested in quality than speed. [via Joystiq]
There’s no word yet on if any 3rd party publishers will be releasing Mac games on Steam from the start, but we can expect most if not all of Valve’s games using the source engine to support Macs.

While I have a good PC gaming rig in addition to my MacBook Pro, I’m still excited by the prospects of Macs finally being treated as gaming machines too by a top software developer/publisher. I would have been far less likely to build a gaming PC last year if Steam was already on the Mac.
