iPhone 3G S Benchmarks and Comparisons: Up to 4x Faster than 3G

[via MacRumors.com] Quite impressive. I’m glad I waited to get an iPhone until now. I’m quite pleased with my new 32GB iPhone 3G S, it’s a large upgrade from my 1st gen 16GB iPod Touch.

My ISP Charter is 3rd fastest in Johnson City, TN on average. Like I’ve said before my ISP hasn’t been half bad until recently…
Just for kicks I thought I’d see how my old home town Tucson AZ does for internet speed, and it sure makes me wish I still lived there.

WTF Charter?! Checkout these speed tests from tonight. The speeds differ greatly depending on what server I test with. Charter has got some big routing issues it would seem.
I’ve highlighted some of the best and worse speeds… (I missed a few, and miss-labeled Vancouver as slow because I was also watching a movie at the time.) My connection should be around 5000 kb/s.
Here’s the summery graph.

This is last night’s Charter Internet speed test. This is the 5MB/s I’m paying for?! I think NOT! It’s not even the 70% of 5MB/s they guarantee. I should be getting at least 3.5MB/s at the worst.
Update: I found a forums thread about Charter speed issues in this area recently. This post sheds some light on my issues:
Tech just came out to the apartment and informed me that they are replacing all the nodes in Johnson City. They are working on it as we speak and it will take another 3 weeks. They have pretty much oversold the area and are adding new lines. So we’re screwed for about another month.

Another Review: Charter Communications

It’s a bit old but this guy’s review is about the most scathing I’ve seen so far.

The thing that really bothers me is that they haven’t been too bad for me until recently. Hulu and Netflix streaming is almost useless most of the time now… The bandwidth drops-off right when I get home from work! (The only time I really do use it.)

PSN download speeds

It took around 2:30 hours for WipeOut HD (1GB) to download on my 5Mbps connection last night. On top of that my PS3 didn’t download in the background while I was watching a DVD with my girlfriend. It didn’t technically start downloading until around 8 pm, as a result it didn’t finish until around 10:40 pm. I figure that would be around 400 MB an hour, or a pathetic 6MB a minute…

This left me with only 30 minutes to play WipeOut HD before I had to go to bed because of work today.

I don’t think I’m imagining things when I say that Xbox Live games downloads go almost twice as fast, if not faster..

I plan to check on my AirPort router configuration again today to make sure the slow speeds aren’t caused by my network… I hope it’s on my end because the speeds I’ve been getting are pathetic.
