New iPhone painting: B&W Nude (SFW lingerie version)
Done on my iPhone in Brushes using both a Pogo Sketch and my finger.
This is the safe for work version of my first real nude artwork (maybe NSFW). I decided to practice some figure drawing using a number of photos on DeviantArt for reference. Here’s the result.
I’m really happy with with it, so I may do some touch-up work in Photoshop later and make it into a desktop wallpaper.

Sander Cohen Mask Painting (also on DeviantArt)
Yet another Brushes for iPhone painting. A mask featured in the game BioShock. It must be halloween being around the corner that’s making me think of masks and BioShock.

Lingerie and Mask Sketch (also on DeviantArt)
Done on my iPhone using Brushes. I used a paper texture as the background layer to give it a traditional sketch look.
Somewhat BioShock inspired (mainly the mask). Not sure why I’ve got BioShock on the mind lately. I made her a little creepy looking to keep that mood.
I don’t normally do “pinup” style art so it was fun. It also makes me want to practice figure drawing more.

My first finished Brushes 2.0 beta Painting
I started on this painting last week with the Brushes 2.0 beta 2 (for iPhone). With beta 4 out today I figured I’d rush finish this painting since there’s currently no way to transfer paintings between versions of the application (or to re-imported exported paintings)… *fingers crossed for this feature*
You’ll notice there’s a lot more detail and care put into the robotic arm than the rest of the painting. It did however turnout quite good for rushing the finished product… I would have liked to put more thought and time into the whole suite though.
Brushes 2 beta requests (iPhone)
If you use Brushes you might be interested in trying the new beta version. I’m quite impressed so far.
Layers For iPhone - Review
Right away the advantages of Layers over all previous iPhone painting applications is apparent from the name. iPhone art programs have been limited to a single layer until now. Brushes and Colors! have been the iPhone art apps of choice, both make great use of the iPhone to allow you to paint or sketch on the go digitally. However both lack layers.
I took most of the day, between things, working on the above painting as my first test of Layers. Once you get used to the interface it’s actually easier to work with than Brushes (my favorite iPhone art app — until now?). Now that I’ve gotten the hang of Layers I’m sure my next painting will be better and take less time.
Anyone who has used graphics programs with layers before will know that layers allow for greater control, detail, and depth in an image because you can edit each layer independently. For example backgrounds can be easily added to paintings of objects or characters without worrying about not painting over the edges of your object or character. Layers supports up to 5 separate layers and a 512x512 pixel canvas, and with the Mac Replay Viewer (very similar to the Brushes Viewer) can export up to 4096x4096 pixel JPEGs or layered PSDs.
In addition to exporting larger format images, the Replay Viewer can play back the painting process and export the video to QuickTime format. So far the only negative experience I’ve had is with the Mac Replay Viewer… There are a few bugs with the first version of the viewer that should be fixed soon according to the the official Layers Twitter. UPDATE: The Replay Viewer has been updated to fix the issues I was having.
Layers will easily replace Brushes as my new favorite mobile art application. It would be hard to go back to working on a single layer. [$4.99 on iTunes]
UPDATE #2 (07-23-09): I’ve been having a few more issues with the Replay Viewer. The below image illustrates the difference in quality between the native 512x512 images and exported higher resolution images.
Layers for iPhone - Competition for Brushes
It’s like Brushes but with layers that can export to Photoshop! Layers is from the developer of NetSketch; it’s also a good drawing app but lacks the natural media style brushes that make Brushes so great. This could be the new best painting app for iPhone.
“Painter Robot” digital sketch: Done with Brushes (for iPhone). A quick sketch, the product of a slow afternoon at work yesterday.
An unfinished Brushes (for iPhone) painting I started a few months ago (my 13th brushes painting apparently).
I was thinking cyber-punk android/assassin or something along those lines. I’ve stalled-out on it for now… Hopefully I’ll finish it with some critique. I was trying something a bit different than usual by making the outlines really bold.
